Cicada / Kiritara - an open edition Prelude Print
A gorgeous emerald cicada was caught by my cat. Not content to have just killed the poor creature, he also tried to destroy the painting in process. Despite Jimmy's best efforts, she has been carefully rendered using layers of watercolour to capture the varying green and earthy hues of her carapace and wings.
The painting was a perfect starter to 'Preludes' of my 'Preludes and Nocturnes' series, which is based upon day dwelling and nocturnal species endemic to New Zealand. What balmy summer day would be complete without the chorus of kiritara.

It has been professionally printed using archival inks on Hahnemuhle William Turner 310gms cotton rag paper. This particular paper is just gorgeous, it has the appearance of water-colour paper and has been specifically created for longevity when used with pigmented inks. Because of this the black tones have a wonderful velvety appearance.
