A brave little Toutouwai / Kakaruwai / South Island robin flits into view. The motion of the indian ink gesture implies the toutouwai's flight path. They are among my most favourite adventure buddies while hiking through forests. I have had them perch on my foot as well as dive bomb me to protect it's nest, while I was assisting a DOC ranger count nestlings.
Te Reregna o te Toutouwai is part of my Fight or Flight series. The recent works that I painted all feature manu / birds that are celebrating the joy of flight.
During the painting process their personalities evolve, taking on a wairua of their own.
The title of this work literally translates to The Flight of the South Island Robin
